20 seconds to get in the front door: Resume Tips
Your resume has to be packed with P.O.W.E.R! On average, a candidate resume only has 20-30 seconds to get in the door or end up stuck in the reject pile. Keep your name on the “Hot List” with these resume tips that will help to impress your future employer:
- Try to avoid resume templates. Be creative but keep it clean and professional – do not use a font smaller than 11 pt.
- Use a reader-friendly format. Ensure key facts show up easily with bullet points and white space to keep information in separate blocks.
- Use a short summary that clearly illustrates your career focus versus an ‘old school’ objective statement. With the speed Recruiters review resumes, a wordy objective statement will not get the job done. In your summary include your profession and how long you have been in this particular area of expertise.
- Keywords galore! You cannot have too many keywords! This will ensure you show up in online searches by Recruiters and within employer, database searches as well. A good rule of thumb is to check against keywords in job postings.
- If you have a 2-page resume, get your best information on page 1.
- Don’t include salary history.
- Keep it honest! Social media and the Internet make it easy for employers to check up on your work history – any exaggerations will catch up with you!
- Creative professionals should always include a link to your online portfolio or links to examples of your work.
- Most importantly – PROOFREAD. One misspelled word can land your resume in the “pass” pile. Have at least 2 other people read over your resume for typos, misspellings, and punctuation errors.
